It was a difficult, emotional experience. The Canadians knew the war would soon end and proceeded cautiously, much as they wished to help the Dutch. Resistance from the SS and Dutch collaborators never slackened and over 100 Canadians were killed from 1-5 May, when the Germans finally capitulated.
